Ada Lovelace

Ada Lovelace was born December 10th, 1815 in London, England. She was educated by private tutors in her youth, and as she grew older sought out higher education. However, women were unable to attend university at this time in England (and many other countries). Despite not being able to attend school, Lovelace’s ambition and interest in engineering and machinery propelled her to teach herself the various subjects. She focused specifically in mathematics, and was assisted by Augustus De Morgan, a University of London professor. After she married, Lovelace was introduced to Charles Babbage, who wrote The Analytical Machine, the first proposed modern computer. Lovelace translated the proposal and published her own ideas of how this ‘machine’ could compute difficult equations. This cemented her as the first computer programmer.
